CONNECTING RELATIONSHIP THROUGH SCRITPURE

THE NATURE OF THE BIBLE

In part 1 of the book we discussed the nature and authority of Scripture. As with the teacher’s relationship with God, the teacher’s relationship to the Bible is foundational. For that reason, some of the basic principles bear brief repetition here.

The Bible teacher must first know and affirm that the Bible is true. Teachers must know the content of the passage selected for teaching and submit their study of the text to the interpretation and leadership of the Holy Spirit. The Bible teacher must place the Bible in its proper setting. That includes understanding the content and cultural background of the Scripture passage. It also includes the textual context: how the passage fits into the whole of Scripture, the book in which it was written, and the immediate context of the surrounding passages. The biblical educator accumulates this knowledge by engaging in serious study of the passage.

At the core of our Christian faith is the knowledge that God chose to reveal Himself to us and that His revelation is true. The Bible is one important way God has provided for us to know Him. A person’s view of Scripture, therefore, is of the utmost importance. It influences both knowledge and practice. A correct view of Scripture involves at least four components: revelation, inspiration, inerrancy, and authority.
